Dear Chicago City Council Committee on Environmental Protection and Energy,

You can protect our community's environment, health and quality of life by upholding the ban on mining.

Mining is prohibited under Chicago’s Air Quality Ordinance due its harmful effects on community health and well-being. Mining increases exposure to high concentrations of ozone and particulate matter which can cause or worsen heart and lung disease, especially among children and seniors. Mining also diverts, consumes and contaminates freshwater resources, kills fish and wildlife, and competes with communities that face water stress.

Blasts, tremors, noise, dust, sinkholes, fractures, and land subsidence are unacceptable, and often underestimated, costs of mining. Mining displaces people and small businesses, limiting local access to goods and services and degrading the social fabric of a community and its long-term economic vitality.

Mining is not revitalization. Mining is an invasive, relentless cycle of extraction and exploitation and vulnerable community members are often targeted for these perilous  jobs.

Please vote "No" to mining in Chicago.

Thank you
